Course info
Analytical Science is a major discipline with applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical and related industries, hospitals and analytical service laboratories. Forensic scientists work in the Forensic Science Service, police laboratories and increasingly in independent laboratories and consultancies. This course gives a comprehensive grounding in Analytical Chemistry and covers areas of Forensic Science, Forensic Biology, Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology. There are excellent employment opportunities. The course considers the science and methodology of measurement and the significance of the results obtained. The approach emphasises problem solving, such as analysis of actual scenes of crime cases. The first year modules provide a foundation in Chemistry and Forensic Science, incorporating practicals directly associated with crime scene investigation. Analytical Chemistry and Forensic Science are further developed in the second year and include DNA fingerprinting and the use of document examination in legal cases. You may choose to pursue an optional period of supervised work experience in the third year. In the final year, as well as a research project, you will also study specialised courses such as Forensic Toxicology and Presentation of Evidence.
